How to Buy Used AirPods Safely

October 6, 2026

AirPods are one of the most counterfeited electronics on eBay. Fake AirPods look nearly identical to real ones, come in convincing packaging, and cost sellers $5 to source from Alibaba. If you don’t know what to look for, you’ll pay $80 for a $5 product.

This guide covers how to spot fakes, which AirPods models are worth buying used, and how to verify authenticity after purchase.

How to Spot Fake AirPods on eBay

Counterfeit AirPods are everywhere. These red flags catch 90% of fakes before you buy:

Price Too Low

If AirPods Pro 2 are selling for $120–150 used and a listing offers them for $55 “brand new sealed,” they’re fake. No one sells genuine AirPods at 75% off.

Stock Photos Only

Legitimate sellers photograph the actual product. If every photo is a marketing image from Apple’s website, the seller either doesn’t have the product or doesn’t want you to see it.

Seller Location and Feedback

Serial Number Check

Ask the seller for the serial number (printed inside the lid of the charging case). Enter it at checkcoverage.apple.com. If it’s not found, or the product description doesn’t match, they’re fake.

Pro tip: Counterfeiters have gotten good at listing real serial numbers they found online. The ultimate test is pairing the AirPods with an iPhone and going to Settings → Bluetooth → tap the “i” next to the AirPods name. Fakes show garbled info or can’t access the firmware version screen.

The Battery Problem

AirPods are disposable technology. The tiny batteries inside degrade faster than any other Apple product. After 2 years of daily use, most AirPods hold 50–70% of original charge. After 3 years, you might get 1.5 hours instead of 4.5 hours.

This is why we recommend skipping AirPods Pro 1st Gen and AirPods 2nd Gen — they’re 3–5 years old, and the batteries are past their useful life. Apple charges $49 per ear for battery replacement (essentially new AirPods at that point).

How to Check Battery Health

AirPods Pro 2 USB-C: The Sweet Spot

The AirPods Pro 2nd Gen with USB-C case is the best used AirPods to buy in 2026:

At $120–150 used, you’re getting a $249 product with most of its battery life remaining.

What to Do When They Arrive

  1. Serial number check. Open the case lid, find the serial number, verify at checkcoverage.apple.com
  2. Pair with iPhone. Real AirPods show the custom Apple pairing animation. Fakes show a generic Bluetooth pairing screen
  3. Check firmware. Settings → Bluetooth → tap “i” → look for firmware version. Real AirPods Pro 2 show version 7A305 or higher. Fakes show nothing or “1.0”
  4. Test ANC. Put them in, enable noise cancellation. Real AirPods Pro dramatically reduce background noise. Fakes play white noise or do nothing
  5. Battery drain test. Full charge, 50% volume, continuous playback. Compare to Apple’s spec
  6. If anything fails: Open a return within 30 days. eBay Money Back Guarantee covers counterfeit goods — the seller pays return shipping
