Best Time to Sell on eBay: Seasonal Pricing Guide
Timing matters more than most sellers realize. The exact same laptop can sell for 15-25% more or less depending on when you list it. If you're selling used electronics on eBay, understanding seasonal pricing trends is free money on the table.
The Annual Cycle of eBay Electronics Prices
January - February: The Post-Holiday Dump
After Christmas, the used electronics market floods. People sell devices they replaced with holiday gifts. Supply spikes, prices drop. If you're a buyer, this is paradise. If you're a seller, it's the worst time to list unless you price aggressively.
- iPhones drop 10-15% below their October prices
- Gaming consoles hold steadier — people got games, not replacement consoles
- Laptops take the biggest hit — back-to-school is months away
March - May: The Recovery Window
The post-holiday flood dries up. Prices stabilize and begin climbing. Tax refund season (March-April) puts extra money in buyers' pockets, and demand rises without a corresponding increase in supply. This is a solid time to sell almost anything.
June - July: Back-to-School Buildup
Parents and students start shopping for laptops, tablets, and accessories. Prices for MacBooks, iPads, and Chromebooks reach their annual peak in this window. If you're selling a laptop, this is your moment.
August: The Plateau
Back-to-school demand is still there, but competition increases as more sellers jump in. Prices flatten. You can still sell well, but the premium window is closing.
September - October: The Apple Effect
Apple announces new iPhones (usually September) and MacBooks (usually October). Two things happen simultaneously:
- Used prices for current-gen devices drop — a one-year-old iPhone loses 15-20% of its resale value overnight when the new model is announced
- Previous-gen "sweet spot" models emerge — the model that's now two generations old becomes the budget pick, and demand for it actually increases at a lower price point
If you're selling an iPhone, list it before the new model announcement. Every day you wait after announcement day costs you money.
November - December: Holiday Demand Surge
Buyers are in gift-buying mode. Demand peaks. Prices increase across the board, especially for popular gift categories: gaming consoles, AirPods, tablets, and smartwatches. But there's a catch.
Sellers also raise prices knowing demand is high, which means your listing is competing against inflated pricing across the board. The sweet spot is early November — before the Black Friday noise makes everything harder to find.
Day of Week Matters Too
eBay's own data shows that listings ending on Sunday evenings get the most bids (for auction-style listings). For Buy It Now listings, the pattern is different:
- Thursday - Sunday — highest conversion rates
- Monday - Wednesday — lower traffic, but serious buyers. Less competition for their attention.
- Payday weekends (1st and 15th of the month) — measurably higher sales volume
The Worst Times to Sell
- The week after a new Apple product launch — everyone lists their old device simultaneously. Supply floods the market.
- Late December through mid-January — post-Christmas sell-off depresses everything.
- Major holiday weekends (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day) — people are offline, not shopping.
- During major retailer sales events — buyers compare your used price against new-with-warranty deals at Best Buy or Amazon.
How to Price at Any Time of Year
Seasonal awareness tells you when to sell. But you still need to know what price to set. The fastest way: search the same item on eBay and look at recently sold listings (not active listings — sold ones). The median sold price is your market rate.
